The last Hollister Award Ceremony was held in April 2002 in conjunction with a Memorial Service celebrating the life of our Founder, Juliet Garretson Hollister. The celebration had been postponed from September 11, 2001. CT Vivian, a Baptist minister and close friend of Juliet’, gave the eulogy. Carman Moore, Skymusic Ensemble and Don Conreaux and the Mysterium Tremendum performed original musical pieces. The theme of the evening was Ecology and Interfaith.
Below is a photograph of our 2001 recipient of the Hollister Award, Dr. Wangari Maathai with President Jack Blessington. Dr. Maathai was introduced by Mary B. Davidson, who spoke of her work with the Green Belt Movement, which teaches women of different tribes and religious backgrounds to plant trees in Kenya, thus improving the ecology of the region.
Also honored as the 2002 Awardee was Father Dr. Thomas Berry, an eco-theologian, whose study blending different faith traditions and the Great Story of the Earth has shifted the thinking of many eminent western theologians to see not humanity, but the earth, as the central character in an epic of the meaning of life. Pictured with President Jack Blessington is Henry Luce III, who introduced Father Berry.
The event was a profound and meaningful experience. Below are member of Mrs. Hollister’s family, Dickerman Hollister, MD, Clay Hollister and Mrs. Catharine Ecton with Dr. Maathai and Father Berry.
