The seventh annual Baha’i Race Unity Day was held at the Oakhurst Community Park on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Native Chukchansi Indian Eric Smith, dressed in a ceremonial red ribbon shirt and wrap made of breech cloth, said a blessing for the participants, the park and added a prayer for the recent tragedy of losing little Kristopher Turner. “I say a blessing for us and the earth,” Smith said. “It is a celebration of all races for their recognition of unity and beauty.” Smith had the participants join hands to receive the blessing.
He chanted and prayed to his grandfather, blessing each participant individually with white sage, ceremonial leaves and water. White Heron Boutique owner, Rhiannon, was the event coordinator.
There were soloists, duos, trios and poetry reading. A tai chi demonstration was performed by Micah. Lesandre Ayrey and her students performed a Bharata Natyam dance. Other performances included, “I am missing you,” by Komal and Chandni Kapoor, Nanika Bhangoo, Mandrika, Sandhu, and Daphne Thampy.
Other performers included Chelsea Thampy, Gayie Ganapathi, Ashtapadi, Tocanto, Eve Amador Gosselin, Joyce Vasquez, Anna Young, Rachel Scott, Jean Butterfield, Harvey Lee White, Joe and Lori Nelson, Joyce Vasquez, the Smiley Mountain Band, Indu Berry, Gypsy style dancing by Rhiannon and students Margina and Alexia.
There was Flamenco dancing and “The Well” World Beat Music and belly dancing by Annette and her students.
Oakhurst’s hot dog vendor, Dr. Dog (Steven Tornese) sold hot dogs. Irene Cordera, a Chukchansi Indian, sold Indian tacos. There was also face painting for the kids.
“I was gifted with the specific blessing 26 years ago,” Smith said. “This is a wonderful day to celebrate unity and beauty from within.”
